Games Football | About
The games football, which were more like games of rugby, had twenty players on each team. That number was later reduced to fifteen following college football rules that were put in effect in 1873. The primary reason for reducing the number of games football players was to enhance their safety.
The person who was largely responsible for reducing the number of players further to eleven was Walter Camp. That was only one of the major changes that Camp introduced in the games. Football thus became more similar to the way we know it at present.
